Insulate to Save Energy
During these cold winter temperatures in Alberta many Albertans notice that their furnace runs often, their home feels cold or they have to keep their thermostat up high just to keep their homes at room temperature. The best remedy for these winter problems is to ensure your attic insulation is adequate. Think about the times you have gone outside fully clothed but you did not wear a toque. You are still feeling cold and that’s because you are losing a lot of heat through your head. The idea of a toque is to keep the heat in. The same goes for your house, adding attic insulation will keep the heat in, which in turn will make your home feel warmer, keep the thermostat turned down and your furnace will run less often.
Now that we have talked about how and why to keep the heat in let’s talk about other benefits. When your furnace is running non-stop you can hear the dollars signs adding up and you can see it on your heating bills. By adding adequate attic insulation, you are keeping the heat in and in turn your heating bill will be less because you won’t be attempting to heat the outside.
A 1000 square foot home that has an R12 and is upgraded to an R50 will save $2724.84 and 9.81 gigajoules over three years. Alberta currently offers rebates to homeowners. The homeowner of the upgrade described above would get $476.85 back in rebates.
