Winter is coming. We can almost feel it knocking on our doors. However, before it gets here, there are a few home maintenance you can do to your home and yard to make sure your home is ready for the impending cold and snowy days.
Around the House
In order to get your home ready for winter, you will want to take a walk around the outside of your home to inspect it for any damage, holes, cracks, gaps, and more. Look at your roof, make sure there is no debris or broken shingles. You will also want to make sure your gutters are clear of debris. You do not want your home to have any additional weight on it. You will also want to clean up your garden, removing your dead annuals, clean up leaves, clear the yard of any children’s or pet toys, and fertilize your lawn. Make sure that you are also mindful of all your seasonal gear. This means storing your patio furniture, clearing of your deck, draining and storing your hoses, and clearing any other outdoor water lines. These simple home maintenance steps can ensure that the outside of your home is ready for winter.
Inside the House
Your next home maintenance steps would be to check inside your home. Now is a great time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries, and any other battery-operated devices in your home, including your smart thermostat. Now that you are running your furnace, make sure you have changed your filter, updated the humidity settings, and get your vents checked and clean. These minor home maintenance will drastically increase the total home comfort throughout the winter. Our last, and most important improvement is to check your attic insulation. Having a properly insulated attic will keep the humidity and temperature of your home comfortable and keep your utility bills lower.
