You have likely heard of the term ghosting before, but maybe not in the context of your ceiling or drywall. So, what is drywall ghosting and what can be done to fix it? Although, you may not know what the term ghosting is, you have likely seen the dark streaks on your walls or your ceilings. These dark drywall ghosting marks are caused by a combination of a few things: moisture, dust buildup, cold air spots, static, soot, condensation, and other air drafts. It often is not just one thing that causes ghosting, and usually every home has a few things that cause the problem.
When there are cold spots on your walls or ceilings dampness can form which then leads to dust or soot accumulating and clinging to the damp spots, leaving a dark streak known as ghosting. Unfortunately, there are many things that cause ghosting, and you cannot simply paint over the problem and hope it goes away. Your ceiling or walls will need to be cleaned thoroughly and the issues will need to be resolved, so that the dirty streaks do not reoccur.
Each home is unique in the circumstances that cause drywall ghosting. Recently, Energy Savers Insulation & Exteriors was in a home where the chimney flue ran inside the wall to the attic and was exposed to dust and had cellulose falling down the wall. This is what was causing those dark ghost streaks on the walls. In order to prevent the ghosting from reappearing, our experts will be building up the soffits and add insulation.
Whatever the combination is, the main reason drywall ghosting occurs is typically from a poor choice of insulation accompanied by a poor vapour barrier combined with moisture. No matter the cause, if you have noticed dark streaking on your ceiling or drywall, we can come and inspect your home’s insulation needs. If you suspect your home is in danger of drywall ghosting, get in touch with our experts today and we can help provide a solution.
